Family fun day is sizzling success

The sun shone and the barbie sizzled while visitors to Bredon Cricket Club lapped up a fabulous family fun day at the weekend.

A large number turned out to the new-format season curtain-raiser, which replaced the traditional cheese-and-wine evening for the first time this year.

Members and guests were treated to live music from the Kings of the Hill while they enjoyed the spring sunshine and glorious setting of our ground at Hill Close.

The barbecue and ice creams sold out, and there were some concerned faces at the bar as the drinks were downed at a ferocious rate, threatening to leave the cellar empty!

Children enjoyed a bouncy castle and playing on the club’s tenderly cared-for outfield.

Club chairman Neil Hall said he was delighted by the turnout.

“We thought we’d try something different this year, and it has been amazing.

“Along with the tower run (May 27) and Bredon Hill Bash (weekends in August) it is going to become one of our key regular events of the year.”

There’s a new look to Bredon Cricket Club’s season curtain-raiser this year.

Our traditional cheese-and-wine evening is being replaced by an afternoon gathering for all the family that we’re calling the First of the Summer Wine.

There will be food, including a barbecue; activities for youngsters, the club raffle and live music from Joel Darkes (of Lunafall). Our licensed bar will be open throughout.

It is being held on Sunday, May 6, and the fun gets under way at 2pm.

There is an open invitation for people unfamiliar with the club to come along and find out what cricket at Bredon is all about.

Most of our junior team coaches will be at the curtain-raiser too, so parents can ask them about how we introduce youngsters to the game and develop their skills. See also our junior cricket FAQ.

Our chairman, Neil Hall, will be talking to visitors about the season ahead, and the ambitious plans we have to raise playing standards and make the club a hub for all ages in the community.

Plans for end-of-season celebrations at Bredon Cricket Club

Bredon's end of season dinner 2016
Bredon’s end-of-season dinner 2016

It has been a good season so far for Bredon Cricket Club, and we have plans to round it off in style.

On Saturday, September 16, there will be a senior players’ award night in the clubhouse.

The bar will be open and there will be a curry buffet.

The evening, which starts after the day’s match finishes, is a chance to recognise and celebrate both individual and team successes.

Then, on Sunday, September 24, we are having a family end-of-season fun day with barbecue, entertainment and activities for children.

Again, the bar will be open, and the fun starts at 2pm.

Both promise to be fantastic occasions. Please make a note in your diary.

Join us for the longest day and Twenty20 cricket (and perhaps some strawberries) at Bredon

There is a chance to enjoy the thrills of Twenty20 cricket on the longest day at Bredon Cricket Club this week.

The club are marking the summer solstice with a friendly match against neighbours Alderton Wanderers.

The action at Hill Close starts at 6pm on Wednesday (June 21), and given the current balmy weather we are all set for a wonderful evening.

Spectators are most welcome.

Our clubhouse bar will be open throughout the match serving draught beer, lager, spirits, soft drinks and wine (including Prosecco) by the bottle or glass.

But please feel free to bring your own food, perhaps some strawberries to share, and enjoy a relaxing few hours of cricket at our attractive ground with its glorious views of Bredon Hill.

  • Watch out, too, for Bredon Hill’s own Twenty20 cricket tournament in August, when four local teams will battle it out for honours in the Bredon Hill Bash.

Summer’s night of music at Bredon

Music and a memorable victory made for a perfect summer evening at Hill Close

Everything fell into place for a perfect summer night at Hill Close.

Balmy June weather, mellow sounds from Cheltenham-based guitar band The Bridge, and the First XI’s 92-run home victory over local rivals Evesham combined to fabulous effect last night.

Members and guests were treated to some first-rate cricket and musical entertainment, and the bar stayed open into the long, light evening.

It doesn’t get much better than this!

There is a night of live music at Bredon Cricket club on Saturday, June 17.

Cheltenham-based  The Bridge are performing at our Hill Close clubhouse from 8pm.

Admission is free, members and non-members welcome, and our fully licensed bar will be open.

The band, who formed in 2001, have played hundreds of gigs across the UK and Europe.

They deliver a vibrant mix of music and showmanship that makes them popular across age groups.

Their playlist includes covers of popular numbers by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Ed Sheeran, Paul Simon and the Undertones.

The band normally comprises Rob McEwan (vocals and guitar), Mark Nye (bass guitar and vocals), Frank Moran (guitar and vocals), and Mark Millward on drums, but on Saturday only Rob and one other band member will be performing at our intimate clubhouse venue.

See you there!

More entertainment for our tower run party

Our programme of entertainment for Sunday’s (May 28) tower run gets even better!

Are playing area will be cleared for family games such as soft-ball cricket and football in the afternoon.

More than 100 people are signed up for the Bredon Cricket Club Tower Run 2017.

The runners set off at 10am and are expected back at the cricket ground from 11am in time for the beginning of a day-long bank holiday weekend party.

The Malvern Hillbillies will set the tone for the fun with their foot-stomping old-time Americana music (see video).

There will also be a barbecue, cake stall and bouncy castle for younger children. Our fully licensed clubhouse bar will be serving refreshments throughout the day.

Although online registration for the run has now closed, we will be accepting sign-ups on the day.

Arrive in good time before the 10am start, and report to chief marshal Jennie Warren with your entry fee (cash or a cheque for £10 made payable to Bredon Cricket Club).

Even if you do not plan to run please turn up to support this community event.

We would love to see spectators lining the route to cheer on the runners, and everyone is welcome to enjoy the fun of our bank holiday party in our picturesque cricket ground.

Join us for a perfect summer Sunday!
